Does Food Really Taste Good with an Air Fryer?
If you add fats to the foods, fats either carry flavors or they are flavors. However, they can be delicious, but not as good as regular fried foods in my opinion. When I make French fries in my air fryer, I coat them with enough fat to ensure they are flavorful and not dry, unappetizing. While air-fried foods can never match the taste of those deep-fried, they still offer a tasty alternative.
First Taste is Very Personal
The first taste is highly subjective and personal. While air-fryers provide a healthy alternative to frying in oil, many air-fried foods like onion rings and French fries are indeed very tasty. However, this taste largely depends on what you're cooking. For instance, air-fried foods handle moist batter poorly and are best suited for items like store-bought frozen French fries. Deep-fried items such as donuts and fritters might not work as well.
Comparison to Deep-Frying
Air-fried foods are not the same as deep-fried foods. They tend to be tastier than baked items, especially for items that are usually deep-fried. However, air-frying isn't ideal for handling moist batter. Therefore, frozen French fries cook up much better in an air fryer than fritters or donuts.
Counter Space and Convenience
I haven't tried air-frying dough-based items like donuts and fritters, but from my understanding, they don’t work well with batter. For items like French fries, air-frying is a great solution, but the counter space they require can make them impractical for small spaces. If you live in a city apartment or condo and only use your air fryer occasionally for French fries, monopolizing counter or cupboard space can be a waste. However, if you have ample space and frequently use the air fryer, it can certainly be a worthwhile investment.
Conclusion
While air-frying isn’t a perfect substitute for deep-frying, it does offer a healthier option for many items. The taste and texture of air-fried food can still be quite appealing, but it's crucial to consider the specific recipes and the space they require. If you enjoy a good French fry and prefer to keep your kitchen space organized, the air fryer might be a great addition to your cooking arsenal. Just be aware of the limitations when it comes to batter and other moist recipes.
