Are the Foils Used for Hair Highlighting and Baking the Same?
The foil used by beauticians for highlighting hair and the foil used for baking food are both made from aluminum but they can differ in thickness and treatment. While they share the same basic material, understanding the differences between the two is crucial for achieving the desired results.
Hair Highlighting Foil
Typically thinner and more flexible, making it easier to wrap around hair strands. Often comes in pre-cut sheets or rolls specifically designed for salon use. May have a coating or treatment to prevent sticking to hair products.Baking Foil
Usually thicker and more durable, designed to withstand high temperatures in the oven. Commonly sold in rolls and used for lining pans, covering dishes, or wrapping food. While both serve different purposes, they are fundamentally made from the same material, aluminum. However, it's advisable not to use hair highlighting foil for cooking due to potential chemical treatments or contaminants that could be present on the beauty foil.
Why Are Beauty Foils Not Safe for Baking?
Traditionally, the foil that beauticians use when highlighting hair is not usually the same foil used for baking food. Some aluminum foil sold in grocery stores for baking may contain a small amount of metal, which may not be safe to use on hair dyes and colors. Here’s why:
If grocery store aluminum foil contains any metal whatsoever, it might heat up when it comes into contact with bleach or other hair colors, potentially leading to less-than-satisfactory results. Any type of metal tools, bowls, or similar items should never be used for mixing and/or applying any hair products which include bleach, ammonia, peroxide, or hair colors. Bleach and/or hair color will react badly when mixed with any products containing metals such as iron, steel, or similar. However, you can use regular aluminum foil for your hair as long as the dye you are using is safe with metal, or if the aluminum foil specifically says it doesn’t contain any type of metal. Alternatively, you could even use waxed paper if desired.
Yes, of course, the foils you buy at a beauty supply store will work very well. The only downside is that professional beauty foils can be more expensive. Some salons do locate much less expensive, general-purpose foil which does not contain any metal and they will buy it in bulk and cut it into strips for use in the salon.
Choosing the Right Foil for Hair Highlights
When choosing the right foil for hair highlighting, it's essential to consider both thickness and flexibility. Foil comes in various strengths and thicknesses, and you'll want to use a material that is tough enough to hold up to the chemicals in the dye while still being malleable enough to keep sections of dyed hair separate.
One trick for ensuring your foil will work well is to fold about an inch of the foil down at the end that will touch the roots of the hair. This makes that end doubly strong and helps ensure that the dye will be contained.
Best wishes for all your hair highlighting endeavors!
