Why I Cook My Own Breakfast and So Should You
Thank you for the opportunity to share my experience with preparing breakfast daily. My husband and I strive for a balanced, nutritious start to our day, and we simply can't get food from drive-thrus due to our dietary and health choices. While fast food might be convenient and tempting, it often doesn't justify the cost and health risks associated with it.
My Daily Routine
I hardly ever eat breakfast unless I'm on vacation. By the time I wake up at 4 am to prepare for work, I'm simply not hungry. Instead, I start the day by taking a nutritional supplement and then snack on a granola bar or piece of fruit around mid-morning when hunger strikes. This makes for a more effective and satisfying meal.
A Behavior Change Over the Years
While I've made adjustments to my breakfast habits over the years, some bad habits persist. Currently, I only make myself breakfast 2-3 times a month. I indulge in a fast food breakfast only when I've been up all night and need to get back to sleep soon after. Most of the time, I avoid eating until I've been awake for four or five hours, often contemplating lunch instead.
My Husband's Role and Our Values
My husband does the cooking on weekdays, while I take care of dinner from scratch at least 5 nights a week. Even on weekends, we prefer to go out for breakfast rather than using drive-thrus. We believe that drive-thrus are completely out of place with enjoying breakfast – much like making love during a root canal procedure. Our values emphasize the importance of a proper breakfast and the joy of preparing a meal.
The Benefits of Prepping in Advance
Preparation is key in my routine. I often cook several days in advance, allowing me to simply grab a meal when I get up. Leftovers come in handy, providing easy meal options that also save time and resources. However, while leftovers are convenient, they can sometimes box you into a set routine, making it harder to experiment with new recipes or try different foods.
A Commitment to Fast Food-Free Living
My commitment to avoiding fast food has strengthened over the past year, and I have fully embraced that change. I am currently on a working vacation, house-sitting at two homes. The refrigerators are well stocked, and I took advantage of this by grilling some sirloin steaks for an early-morning breakfast. This experience reaffirms my dedication to making healthy choices for me and my family, as well as the satisfaction that comes from preparing a meal from scratch.
Conclusion
Breaking the habit of relying on fast food and instead investing time in preparing your own breakfast can lead to healthier lifestyle choices and a more fulfilling daily routine. By planning ahead, you can enjoy a nutritious start to your day that aligns with your dietary and health goals.
