Secret Santa Calls
On the quirky and sweet side, my dad’s side of the family had a little ritual that we loved. We would gather at my grandparents' house on Christmas Eve. After some socializing and dinner, the kids would get antsy for their gifts. So, my grandpa would dial the phone to pretend he was calling Santa to ask him to bring the presents quicker. We kids would hide in the bathroom so that Santa wouldn't see us. When the presents were being brought out, my uncle with a deep booming voice would come up the stairs shaking jingle bells and bellowing, 'Ho! Ho! Ho!' Then we would come out, and it was a simple little ritual but magical for us kids. It was a tradition that created a lot of excitement and laughter.
Age-Appropriate Gift Exchange
My girlfriend's family has a unique rule that you are only over 18 years old if you are allowed to receive anything other than socks and underwear for Christmas. They would set up a huge table with socks and underwear in various styles and sizes, both men's and women's, and the number of pairs you could take was based on your age. This tradition not only encouraged our friend to come of age but also brought a lot of laughter and joy during the celebrations.
Innovative Main Meal
Many families have unique and slightly out-of-the-norm traditions when it comes to their main Christmas meal. For example, my family has a tradition of consuming roadkill for our main meal. While this may seem untraditional to many, our family knows how to prepare it right, and it turns out to be quite delicious.
