Understanding and Overcoming Unexplained Anxiety: A Personal Journey

Often, waking up feeling anxious can be a mysterious experience, leaving one wondering why such feelings arise. I, for instance, frequently wake up with anxiety, especially when I don’t know the exact cause. Once started, the lifelong journey of understanding and managing anxiety, originated when I experienced my first panic attack at the young age of 6.

For over 70 years, I have been on a quest to comprehend the reasons behind my anxiety, but the clinical psychology profession has only provided partial answers. Genetic inheritance and environmental factors, such as the home environment, are often cited as contributors. With nearly 1,048,576 possible combinations of just 20 variables, it is unsurprising that pinpointing a single cause is challenging. This is why I have been in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for 11 years. Though progress has been made, the battle continues as I strive to understand and overcome my anxiety.

Other Factors Behind Unexplained Anxiety

Unexplained anxiety can arise from a variety of sources. Physical conditions such as thyroid issues or diet can contribute to anxiety levels. Moreover, thoughts and beliefs play a significant role. For example, if someone repeatedly tells themselves, “I always get anxious going to the store,” their mind will follow suit and create anxiety. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, cognitive restructuring, and dietary adjustments can help manage these thoughts.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about various aspects of daily life, even when there is no clear or specific cause. GAD can manifest as a constant sense of dread or fear without a known trigger. This disorder can significantly impact a person's quality of life, hence seeking professional help is highly recommended.

If you find yourself feeling anxious frequently, but cannot identify a specific trigger, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They can offer a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Start by confiding in a friend or family member who can listen without judgment. Discuss your struggles and see if any patterns or insights emerge. Should this approach not bring relief, seeking the assistance of a trained talk therapist may be the next step in your journey.
