The Sweet Tale of Wavy Gravy and Ben Jerry’s

Beneath the creamy layers of ice cream, there's a rich story that spans decades and continents. Today, I'll delve into the creation of a unique ice cream flavor that touched the hearts of many - the Ben Jerry’s Wavy Gravy pint, inspired by the legendary Wavy Gravy and his clown camp for children.

Bringing Wavy Gravy to Ice Cream

It was 1985 when I, the RD director at Ben Jerry’s, was tasked with creating an ice cream flavor that would not only appeal to our customers but also align with one of the most remarkable figures of the counterculture movement, Wavy Gravy.

Wavy Gravy, born as Dwight Williams Jr., is a musician, actor, and peace activist best known as the leader of the Hog Farm commune and a prominent figure in the Woodstock festival. His influence on counterculture and social activism can still be felt even today, having led him to co-found the War Resisters League in the 1960s, among other ventures.

A Flavor That Speaks to the Soul

Creating a flavor in honor of Wavy Gravy wasn’t just a culinary challenge, but also an emotional one. Ben Cohen, a co-founder of Ben Jerry’s, had reached out to Wavy Gravy, and together, they decided that the ice cream should carry a message of peace and love, which Wavy Gravy stood for.

The flavor development process was extensive and meticulous. Gleaning inspiration from Wavy Gravy’s colorful and eclectic persona, we wanted to create the perfect balance of flavors that would resonate with his spirit. After multiple batches, we hit upon the ideal combination, resulting in an ice cream that was intensely hazelnut with a vein of rich chocolate running through it.

From Concept to Commercialization

As the flavor development progressed, we decided to take it a step further by incorporating a tie dye design that complemented the flavors. We wanted to capture the essence of Wavy Gravy’s commitment to peace, love, and self-expression.

However, realizing the final product was not the only challenge. There were logistical hurdles, such as ensuring the ice cream’s durability, taste consistency, and visual appeal. But after several iterations, the final pint was ready to be introduced to the world.

Supporting a Noble Cause

Our goal was not just to sell ice cream but to make a positive impact. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Wavy Gravy pint went towards funding Wavy Gravy’s Clown Camp for Kids. The camp offers children a safe space to explore their creativity, learn valuable life skills, and experience the joy of performing arts.

A Legacy of Love and Peace

The Wavy Gravy pint was a symbol of the enduring relationship between culture, activism, and consumer goods. It showcased how a simple ice cream flavor could evoke memories, spread joy, and support a humanitarian cause.

Today, even if Wavy Gravy is not as deeply missed as in the past, the story of the Ben Jerry’s Wavy Gravy pint lives on. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between artists, activists, and business leaders to make a difference.

So, the next time you indulge in a pint of this creamy delight, remember the man, the activist, and the legacy they carried.
