The Most Expensive Foods I’ve Purchased
I’m on public assistance with a subsistence income, so rarely do I indulge in a very expensive meal. However, over the past few years, oysters have been my splurge. I used to buy a gallon for the price of a pint. Recently, I tried wagyu beef sashimi, but it was extravagantly priced and rather off-putting. The other day, my sister and her husband took me to a sushi restaurant in Malibu where they had live king crabs brought to the table. The experience was a mix of indulgence and ethical consideration. Still, the fresh king crab turned out to be the most expensive food that I have ever purchased.
A Bizarre Sushi Experience
The sushi restaurant in Malibu stood out for its unique live king crab, a king of the sea that was brought to the table alive. I touched and stared at its beautiful eyes, a moment that brought a mix of enjoyment and guilt. Not wanting to feel bad, I justified it by reminding myself that the crab had lived a good life and that survival of the fittest applied to the whole food chain, including humans. However, there were some days when I felt more morally conflicted. One memorable experience was with smoked sturgeon, a delicacy that only appeared on Sundays.
Rare and Expensive Caviar
Another pinnacle of luxury dining was Sevruga caviar. At work, we had a Diners Club where we contributed £10 a week and dined out monthly. When we went without dining out for six months, we had a hefty sum to spend. We chose a Russian restaurant in London, where we splurged on a dish that cost more than £1000 per kilo of caviar. The experience was a testament to the luxurious nature of such dishes, and it made me reflect on the value of such indulgences.
Experiences with Expensive Prime Rib and Other Dishes
Other expensive meals included prime rib for guests and various other premium dishes. While these may not be as exorbitant as caviar, they are beyond the scope of my usual budget. In the restaurant industry, I often encounter dishes that are priced to reflect their quality and rarity. Ketones and the exorbitant cost made these moments memorable, though not without their ethical questions.
As someone on a tight budget, the luxury and expense of these meals serve as a stark reminder of the world of fine dining. While I rarely get to indulge, the experiences are a unique blend of joy and ethical consideration when it comes to the animals, often on the line.
