The Indispensable Marmalade: A Morning Staple and Beyond

The Indispensable Marmalade: A Morning Staple and Beyond

Every morning with a freshly baked croissant and a huge cup of cappuccino… my day starts with homemade orange marmalade or strawberry and fresh cherry in season. How can you have croissants with just butter and no marmalade?!

While my usual breakfast might include bacon, scrambled eggs, and sausages, marmalade takes a starring role. Gone are the days when I would reach for honey only during the dead of winter. My personal favorite is Rose’s lime marmalade, and Buderim ginger marmalade is another go-to for a tangy kick.

Roasted or Toasted: How I Enjoy Marmalade

Frank Cooper's vintage Oxford Cut Marmalade is a special treat, usually reserved for 11:00 am with a mug of freshly brewed coffee. Sometimes, I indulge in Tiptree's Tawny Orange Marmalade, which I believe is one of the best marmalades out there, not overly sweet, but tangy and slightly bitter. It's also my choice for rice pudding.

Spreading the Marmalade Love: A Sunday Breakfast Treat

Recently, I tried Helen Rennie's rugelach recipe and was pleasantly surprised that even my first attempt yielded delicious results. I experimented with apricot and cherry spiced with marmalade, walnuts, and sweeteners, creating a perfect blend of flavors. While the first batch looked like it was cooked up in a cauldron, it tasted like divine heaven on a cracker. Eventually, I used more marmalade and spices to get the right balance. The second batch was a success, and they disappeared in an instant.

The Versatile Nature of Marmalade

Marmalade is not just for breakfast. I've seen different types, such as marmalade made with sweet oranges in Spain, which are quite different from the bitter Seville oranges traditionally used. Other flavors include lemon, lime, tangerine, and various blends. Marmalade is so versatile that it can be used in desserts, sandwiches, or simply spread on bread and butter.

So, the next time you wake up with a craving for a morning treat, consider the magic of marmalade. Whether you're a fan of the classic orange, the zesty lime, or the ginger kick, marmalade is the perfect way to start your day.
