The Great Ranch Debate: A Personal Opinion on Burger Condiments

The obsession people have with ranch dressing in certain parts of the US is an enigma to me. For some, ranch is an essential topping on their burgers, while for others, it's a controversial choice. This debate is not new, and it's a perfect example of the diverse tastes and preferences when it comes to burgers and condiments.

The Freedom to Choose

There is no such thing as an improper condiment on a burger. In fact, the phrase "You Do You" is never truer than when you are making your own burger. Whether you prefer mayonnaise, thousand island dressing, or any other condiment, it's all about personal preference. The same goes for adding ranch to a burger. I don't see anything wrong with it, and neither should you. My personal choice is mayonnaise, but I wouldn't judge anyone who puts ranch on their burger.

Storebought vs Homemade

Most people who use ranch on burgers use the powder version and mix it with the meat. While this can make the burger taste decent, it might not be for everyone. Storebought ranch can be a bit too liquid for my taste, which is why I prefer to mix the seasoning into some sour cream. This mixture is thicker, which is preferable, but not so thick as to be a slice of cheese. If you prefer a thinner consistency, adding some buttermilk can achieve that.

Respecting Others' Choices

Some might indulge in more unique and unconventional toppings like blue cheese, chili, pineapple, horseradish, mac and cheese, chocolate pudding, or even ice cream and hot fudge. These choices might be outlandish for some, but the beauty of making your own burger is that it's all about personal preference. If it's your burger, put whatever you like on it. However, if it's someone else's burger and they want ranch, let them put it on themselves.

The Cookie-Cutter Approach

I don't have an opinion on what YOU put on a burger; it's not my concern. What I do care about is that everyone gets a seasoned medium-rare burger on a toasted bun. However, what you do with it once it hits your plate is your concern. So, whether you prefer mayonnaise, ranch, or any other condiment, enjoy your burger the way you like it.

Conclusion: Taste is a Personal Matter

IMHO, who cares about the opinions of others where one's "taste" in foods is concerned? Ranch is a wonderful condiment for a burger. It adds a unique flavor that complements many burger styles. Whether you love it or not, it's fundamental to respect each other's choices and preferences. After all, "You Do You" is a universal truth, especially when it comes to food.
