The Art of Ordering a Sub-Sandwich: From Veggie Delite to Tuna Melt
Finding My Perfect Sub-Sandwich
At a place like Subway, where customization is the norm, creating the perfect sub-sandwich is both an art and a science. My preference, for instance, has a lot to do with my work. As the person making my own sandwich, I can really go wild with the ingredients. My personal favorite is a Footlong Italian herbs and cheese meatball marinara with pepper jack cheese. For the veggies, I add onions, green peppers, black olives, and olive oil, then toasted till golden. Once served, I pile boatloads of spinach on top and garnish with a sprinkle of lettuce (optional, depending on how much greener I feel that day). To taste, I sprinkle in more parmesan cheese, sub-spice, salt, pepper, honey mustard, and chipotle sauce, a little extra for that extra punch. Sometimes, things get messy, and I make sure to have at least 30 napkins and a fork ready. It’s messy but it’s so delicious.
The Smelliest Sub-Sandwich: Tuna Melt
Apart from my personal preferences, there are certain sub-sandwiches that stand out due to their distinct smell and taste. One such classic is the Tuna Melt. This sandwich is not only delectable but also notoriously smelly. I learned the hard way that this sandwich can leave a lingering scent. After consuming a Tuna Melt, attempting to share a kiss with an ex, for instance, would be met with an inevitable reaction. The ex would likely ask, “Whoa, what is that smell?” Responding with “Um, I just had a Subway Tuna Melt,” is unlikely to save the day. For the record, a man is less likely to want a second date if your breath smells of cheesy fish.
Ordering My First Sub-Sandwich
Before I could ever order a sub-sandwich with precision, I had to start somewhere. My first experience with Subway was a tale of confusion and nervousness. My younger brother had suggested that I pick up a Veggie Delite for him on my way home. As I stood in line, I watched another customer order every detail of their sandwich with perfect finesse, making me feel even more out of place. When it was my turn, I made the mistake of asking for a Veggie Delite without first knowing the options. Realizing the situation was beyond my control, I decided to match the other customer's order, which included a Parmesan Oregano bread, all the vegetables, and all the sauces. Adding salt and pepper after adding everything, it was a relief to finally place my order. From that day on, this has become my go-to order, always the same: Veggie Delite, Parmesan Oregano bread, with all the extra vegetables and sauces, and no change to that order whatsoever.
