Mass production of coffee beans may have come a long way, but there are still unmistakable advantages to home roasting. Each batch of coffee beans has its unique characteristics, which require different roasting times and temperatures to achieve the perfect flavor. An experienced roaster can perfectly time the process, resulting in a custom-tailored flavor that cannot be replicated by mass-produced beans. While advancements in technology have improved mass production, it still lacks the personal touch that makes each home-roasted batch unique.

Personal Experience: A DIY Brewing Journey

Imagine the excitement of roasting your own coffee beans for both personal consumption and your professional coffee cart business. I embarked on a journey to perfect my home roasting techniques, and I can confidently say it was both fun and challenging. My initial experience involved using my propane BBQ to roast 5 to 10 pounds of beans daily. The process required precise temperature control and careful monitoring to ensure the beans reached the ideal roasting level.

My journey did not stop there. I even crafted my own ceramic coffee roaster to fit onto a rotisserie. The ceramic design included bumps for tumbling the beans, preventing them from burning. Step-by-Step Home Roasting Process

Let the beans rest and cool off, misting them with a hose and allowing them to sit for about 20 minutes.

Proceed to the next batch immediately after cooling the current batch.

While the process is exciting, it is important to use protective gear throughout the process, including gloves and rags. I also used pottery tongs, which unfortunately led to a minor mishap where the tongs dropped, causing ceramic fragments to fly. In the future, I opted for Kevlar gloves designed for hot pottery handling, which worked well. Additionally, the rotisserie motor got hot and eventually failed, leading me to stop using the BBQ for roasting.
