My Journey to Becoming 100% Vegan: Challenges and Successes
Switching to a 100% vegan lifestyle is a journey that can take various lengths of time, depending on one's starting point and the personal challenges they face. For me, it was a multifaceted process involving dietary preferences, family considerations, and ethical concerns. Here, I will share my experiences and the highs and lows of my transition.
From Eggs to Veganism
My journey to veganism began as a teenager, around 14 years old, after spending 3 weeks in Spain where nearly every meal was a potato omelette. The repetitive exposure to this dish turned me off from eggs, making them slightly easier to give up. However, dairy products like milk and cream were much simpler to transition away from – today, I make them from cashews. Cheeses, on the other hand, took the longest. I make a variety of cheese from nuts and coconut milk, but the process remains labor-intensive.
The Transition from 14 to 15
Finding a way to go 100% vegan, I underwent a 6-month transition period. At the root of the delay were my parents, who initially needed time to research and ensure veganism was a healthy option for teenagers. Of course, after seeing footage of animal slaughterhouses and dairy farms, I would have gone vegan immediately. However, the need to see the process through with my parents meant a bit more time. Eventually, at 15, I felt healthier than ever, and the transition was well worth it.
From Vegetarian to Vegan: A Cultural Shift
As a teenager, I adopted a vegetarian diet after moving out of my parents' home at 17. Interestingly, I never missed meat; I simply didn't want to pay someone to butcher animals on my behalf when I wouldn't be willing to do it myself. Around a year later, at 18, I went vegan with my brothers after a 'last supper' of milk chocolate.
The Cheese Challenge and Beyond
One of the most significant challenges during my transition was giving up cheese. Not only is it addictive, but it's often used as a substitute for meat due to its savory and satisfying flavor. However, with advancements in vegan food technology, there are now many tasty products available, such as vegan cheese and burgers, that can help ease the transitional period. Alternatively, if you're committed to the lifestyle, you can continue to use these products as an ongoing part of your diet.
The Power of Awareness and Immediate Transition
For some, like myself, going vegan is an immediate decision influenced by the awareness of health and ethical issues. My journey to veganism began after reading John Robbins' book 'Diet for a New America,' which detailed the health and animal issues associated with meat and dairy consumption. For me, this moment of enlightenment led to an overnight transition to a fully vegan lifestyle, and it was surprisingly straightforward. I found the new way of eating enjoyable and fulfilling.
The key takeaway from my experience is that the journey to a vegan lifestyle is highly individual. Whether it's a gradual transition or an immediate change, the most important thing is staying committed to your goals and finding the best path for you.
