My Journey Away from Fast Food: Lessons from My Life and Eating Habits
Over the years, my consumption of fast food, particularly Taco Bell, has undergone a significant transformation. In the past, it was a regular part of my life, but since the loss of my wife, I have made concerted efforts to reduce my intake and find healthier alternatives.
From Regular to Rare
Before my wife's passing three years ago, Taco Bell was a frequent stop for us. My wife loved it, and we often got takeout from it along with Popeye’s Chicken. However, life changed dramatically after she was gone. In the three years since, I haven’t stepped into a Taco Bell or a Popeye’s, and I can count the number of McDonald’s visits on one hand. On average, I go to McDonald’s just twice per year, usually while driving my Tesla for a road trip to Southern California. The only fast-food joint I encounter during these trips is Carl's Jr. or Subway, both located conveniently next to Tesla Superchargers on I-10 in Quartzsite, AZ, and Indio, CA.
Switching to Healthier Options
Since my wife passed away, I have turned to meal delivery services to simplify my meal planning and preparation. EveryPlate has become a valuable resource for healthy, customizable meals. These meals usually consist of between three to four different dishes, which take about 45 minutes to prepare but offer a generous serving size. Each box often leaves me with leftovers, sometimes even enough for a meal or two the next day. This has not only improved my eating habits but also allowed me to enjoy a more balanced diet.
Workplace Dynamics and Eating Habits
My workplace schedule often involves me stopping by a casual dine-in restaurant named Bojangles, where my sister's boyfriend works, to grab breakfast or lunch. This is usually the only time I eat out during the week. Sharing this experience with my colleague, who has the nickname "Slingblade" due to an incident involving a small engine, adds a personal touch to my dining experiences. Occasionally, I might indulge in fast food outside these routines, but it is exceptionally rare.
Lessons Learned
My journey away from fast food has taught me valuable lessons about the impact of regular indulgences on health and lifestyle. It is not just about avoiding unhealthy foods; it’s also about finding sustainable, balanced alternatives that fit into a busy schedule. The decision to switch to healthier meal options has not only been beneficial for my physical health but has also provided a sense of comfort and routine.
Switching from fast food to healthier meal delivery options and occasional dining experiences not only enhances one's well-being but also enriches social interactions. From being a frequent Taco Bell patron to now enjoying home-cooked and professionally-delivered meals, my eating habits have evolved to reflect a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
