My Coffee Affinity: Beyond Just a Drink

My Coffee Affinity: Beyond Just a Drink

Introduction

When it comes to coffee, I hold a distinct stance. I favor dark roast, especially French roast, which carries a distinct flavor profile. I am not a fan of light roasts, which do not appeal to my senses. If you cannot get that, I would typically choose a dark roast with nothing else. I believe good coffee doesn’t need additives, just a high-quality bean and a touch of cream for enhancement if needed.

Dark Roast: The Better the Darker, the Better

Dark roast is my preference, and I find it superior in taste. A French roast from SF Bay in California is one of my favorites, as it is both affordable (under $20 for a 3-pound bag at Costco) and exceptional in quality. Despite the large coffee chains being popular, I still prefer Starbucks’ coffee over Peet’s.

Variety in Coffee

For me, a diverse flavor profile is what makes coffee special. I prefer East African coffees such as Ethiopian Mocha Limu, Kenyan, Burundian, and Ugandan, which are sharper and more acidic. New World coffees tend to be softer in flavor. I also enjoy medium roasts that lean towards dark, often referred to as a 'full city' roast. I relish a plain, black cup of coffee, but occasionally mix it up with cardamom, cinnamon, or flavored syrups like French vanilla or hazelnut.

Brew Methods and Personal Preferences

My brewing methods rarely involve drip coffee makers. Instead, I prefer Aeropress for solo servings and French press when sharing with others. Both methods involve full immersion brewing, which is satisfying for me. I understand that to true coffee enthusiasts, I might be considered a heretic, but my tastes are unique and personal.

Adulterated Brews

To be honest, I do not hold instant coffee in high regard. I prefer Folger's Instant coffee, which I enjoy heavily adulterated. Whether it's half cream and half sugar, or even full sugar and milk, it satisfies my taste buds. Sometimes, for a treat, I might add semi-skimmed cream to my Ethiopian or Mocha Limu coffee.

Conclusion

While coffee may just be a drink to many, it is a ritual and a passion to me. My love for dark roast, detail in flavors, and appreciation for a unique brewing process combine to make each cup a memorable experience. Whether you share my views or not, I hope this insight will help you understand the nuances of coffee and its significance to true coffee connoisseurs.
