Living in a Submarine: An Insider’s Perspective
Imagine spending months at a time in a dark, confined space with 100 other people. This is the reality for submariners like myself. Whether you're looking out the window or working within the vessel, the absence of sunlight and the constant hum of machinery can create a surreal environment.
Isolating but Comfortable
Most of the time, I find the solitude enjoyable. I can work independently or collaborate with others as needed. The third shift was a bit challenging to adapt to, but with perseverance, anything is achievable. Imagine if you were in a submarine; you might see darkness all around, much like looking out a window in pitch black.
Living Conditions
Living conditions in a submarine are akin to living in a long steel tube. The crew is often made up of individuals who have faced similar challenges and share the same mental fortitude. The alert system can be triggered at any moment, demanding that we be immediately ready. It's a life that is lived in moments of high alert and constant readiness.
Returning to Land
When it's time to return to shore, the transition back to normal living can be disorienting. Everything seems gigantic, from doorways to the world outside. It's as if I'm looking at things with a fresh pair of eyes. The stark contrast between the confined space and the open environment on land highlights just how much we rely on our routines.
Living on a submarine is not for everyone, but for those who embrace it, it is a unique and exhilarating experience. From the distinct smell to the constant hum of machinery, each aspect of life on a submarine creates a life that is both isolating and rewarding.
