Exploring the Untouched America: States and Landscapes I Would Like to Visit
As an expatriate living outside the United States, fulfilling my travel bucket list is not as simple as hopping in my car to explore nearby states. While I've managed to visit 46 out of the 50 US states, there are several destinations that I have not yet been able to reach. Some of these areas include the picturesque Northeast, the mesmerizing western landscapes, and the cultural heart of the U.S. South. Let's delve into my travel aspirations, the reasons behind them, and the awe-inspiring places I hope to visit in the near future.
A Northeastern Destination Hangover
There are still three northeastern states on my checklist, namely Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. These states, often overshadowed by their more famous counterparts in the Midwest and the West, are rich in natural beauty and culinary delights. One of the main reasons I hope to visit these areas is to indulge in the famous Maine lobster, a local delicacy worth every bite. I am equally captivated by the Vermont landscape, featuring rolling hills, lush forests, and quaint small towns that offer breathtaking scenery. New Hampshire, with its ski resorts and stunning coastline, is another gem in the northeastern crown that I would like to uncover.
Western Wonders: A Journey Through Natural Splendor
Whereas the eastern part of the country holds a special allure, the western states are equally mesmerizing. The national parks and natural wonders here are among the most revered landscapes in the nation. On my wish list, I would love to visit Yellowstone National Park, famous for its geysers like Old Faithful and the fascinating wildlife. Another destination that beckons me is Yosemite, known for its striking granite cliffs, waterfalls, and diverse flora. Expanding further west, the Grand Tetons in Wyoming and the rugged Rocky Mountains present endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Lastly, the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon, both in Arizona, are jaw-dropping natural wonders that I wish to experience in person.
The Deep South: A Cultural Journey
While the history and culture of the southern states hold significant allure, there are still unexplored regions of the Deep South that I yearn to visit. The "Deep South," as it is often referred to, encompasses a diverse range of cultures and locales, each with its unique charm. I have the opportunity to connect with friends who have settled in this region, including my brother, who now calls Louisiana home. Despite his positive experience and fond memories, I am hesitant to follow in his footsteps and visit the Deep South for now.
Must-Visit Natural Marvels and National Parks
There are many places within the United States that I have yet to explore and which are known for their natural splendor and historical significance. Here are a few of the top locations on my wish list:
Denali National Park, Alaska: Home to the highest mountain in North America, Denali is renowned for its stunning peaks, vast glaciers, and diverse wildlife. This remote park is a true gem in the crown of American landscapes. Hawaii: The tropical paradise of Hawaii offers unique environments and some of the largest mountains on Earth. This island state is both exotic and awe-inspiring, and I have always dreamt of experiencing its natural beauty firsthand. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks: These legendary locales may be more challenging to reach, but their combined natural beauty and historical significance make them a top priority for me. The opportunity to witness the unique wildlife and landscapes within these parks is truly unmissable. Two national parks that I have included on my list are Isle Royale in Wisconsin and Dry Tortugas in Florida. While I have been close to these places, the time and effort required to visit them have prevented me from doing so yet. However, with a bit of planning and determination, these experiences will undoubtedly be worth the effort.
