Exploring Non-European Cheeses: A European Cheese Lover's Perspective
I've always been a cheese lover, with a particular fondness for those with a rich, moldy flavor. However, over the years, I've had the pleasure of trying a variety of non-European cheeses, and some of them have indeed been on par with European counterparts. My adventures in cheese hunting have led me to discover Cotija and Mexican Manchego, which, according to my palate, match the quality of renowned European cheeses.
Mexican Cheeses: A Taste of the New World
Cotija is an excellent example of a cheese that meets European standards. This Mexican variety transcends its origin and offers a flavor profile reminiscent of Parmesan. In the same vein, Mexican Manchego is another gem that has found a special place in my cheese collection. While I slightly prefer the Mexican Manchego over its Spanish counterpart, it remains challenging to find outside of certain specialized shops in my region.
American Cheeses: Acquaintances and Misunderstandings
Turning to the American cheese scene, Monterey Jack has been one of my go-to options. This cheese, with its mild and creamy texture, doesn't disappoint. However, my experience with Colby is somewhat disappointing. Colby is often marketed as a watered-down cheddar, and indeed, it proves to be true. The curds are cooked in water instead of whey, a practice that is not only peculiar but also detrimental to the flavor, at least in my opinion.
The Cheeses of the Middle East and Asia
When it comes to Middle Eastern and Asian cheeses, my experience is somewhat limited. These regions often produce variations of fresh or white cheeses, which, as a lover of stronger, aged varieties, is not really my thing. Therefore, I can't offer a meaningful comparison against the fresh dairy cheeses found in Europe.
Halloumi, Dil Lor, and Paneer are a few examples of cheeses from these regions that I've had the pleasure of tasting. Unfortunately, I find it hard to enjoy fresh cheeses, so I generally steer clear of them unless they are part of specific dishes.
Global Cheese Quest: A European Cheese Lover's Journey
A global cheese quest is not part of my regular activities. I am most fond of cheeses that stand out with their complex and pungent flavors, such as Vsterbottensost and St Agur. Parmesan and parmesan-style cheeses are also among my favorites. I tend to gravitate towards strongly flavored cheeses and rarely opt for plain varieties like Gouda or Port Salut. For me, the journey through the world of cheese is all about discovery and indulgence, whether it's an old European classic or a new discovery from far-flung lands.
While I have tasted and enjoyed a variety of non-European cheeses, the true essence of my cheese journey remains rooted in the rich and diverse world of European cheeses.
