Personal Experiences and Insights

While some dedicated Bengali restaurants do exist, they can be hard to find. My personal experience living in the US for my whole life has only exposed me to a couple of dedicated Bengali restaurants. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I didn't see any Bengali restaurants, but there were plenty of North and South Indian and some Pakistani restaurants.

Personal Experience in New York City

One of my most memorable experiences with Bengali cuisine was at Aladdin Sweets Restaurant in Astoria, New York. My sister and I had amazing Bengali food here, and it was just like my mom's cooking but a bit more professional and tastier. The experience was funny because my sister and I, who look Bengali-ish and can pronounce food names really well but don't speak Bengali, were not particularly interested in searching for Bengali restaurants.

The staff at the restaurant were initially confused, but they were really nice and friendly. Despite the lack of proficiency in the language, the food was excellent, and it's apparent that there are quite a few good Bengali restaurants in New York City. A simple search on Yelp should help you find the perfect place to enjoy Bengali cuisine.

Personal Experience in Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, I discovered a Little Bangladesh in Koreatown and visited Deshi Food Groceries. Unfortunately, we went around 2 PM, and the restaurant was more like a deli with all the curries sitting out on hot plates. The quality was much lower compared to when I was in New York. The men working in the restaurant were also unfriendly to my boyfriend and me, who were non-Bengali speakers.

While there are more upscale Indian/Bengali restaurants in Los Angeles, they mostly serve traditional Indian fare, which isn't significantly different from the usual North Indian restaurant.

Final Thoughts

Bengali cuisine offers a unique and diverse culinary experience. Whether you're in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, or Boston, there are several dedicated Bengali restaurants that serve authentic dishes. Do your research, check the menus, and support these establishments to keep this vibrant and flavorful culture alive in the United States. Enjoy the journey of discovery and the delicious flavors of Bengal!
