Popular Pork Cooking Methods

Now that you know where to find recipes, let's explore some popular cooking methods for pork:

Braising

Braising is a technique where pork is braised on both sides and then simmered in a liquid, often beer, until tender and flavorful. Popular cuts for this method include pork loin and pork chops.

Recipe Example: Braise pork chops or loin on both sides, then add beer and simmer covered on low heat for about an hour. Monitor the amount of liquid and add more as needed. Cook the juices down and deglaze the pan by flipping the pork to get a rich, flavorful coating.

Shake and Bake

The shake and bake method involves coating pork with seasoned bread or cracker crumbs. Here’s a simple recipe:

Moisten pork chops or loin with milk. Place them in a bag, add the seasoned bread or cracker crumbs, and shake until coated. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes.

This method is quick, simple, and ensures deliciously crispy, flavorful pork chops.

Carnitas

Carnitas, a popular Mexican dish, involves cooking pork shoulder in a crockpot with spices until it becomes tender and flavorful. This dish is perfect for serving on corn tortillas.

Chicken Curry with Pork Substitute

An interesting twist on chicken curry, I accidentally used pork instead of chicken from my freezer. The result was a Chicken Pork Curry that was not only tasty but surprisingly healthy. Here’s how to make it:

600g pork (tenderloin works well) 1 cup stock (chicken, pork, or beef); chicken stock was used Half a cup of yogurt or 10cl heavy cream (or both if you're indulging) 1 head of garlic, minced 2 tbsp olive oil Salt, pepper, curry powder Veggies of choice (optional, such as red pepper and peas) Soy sauce (optional) Chili pepper (optional)

1. Wash and cut veggies, if using. Dice garlic and reserve. Mince the pork into small pieces. 2. Toss pork with salt, pepper, and curry powder. 3. Heat a pan on medium with 1 tbsp of olive oil. When hot, throw in the pork and stir until almost cooked but not completely. 4. Reserve pork. 5. In another pan or after washing the same one, heat another tbsp of olive oil. Add garlic and more curry powder. Cook until garlic is tender. If using veggies, add them now and let them soften. 6. Add stock, put back in pork, and simmer until reduced by half. Add yogurt and/or cream and stir until creamy. 7. Serve with rice, sautéed if you have the time.

Marinated Pork

For a quick and easy marinade, mix oil, salt, pepper, paprika, basil, and chili. Let the pork pieces sit overnight in the marinade, then cook on high heat without overcooking. This method produces tender and flavorful pork.
