Ever Rich: The Unchanged and Expanding Boundaries of My Diet
My journey with food has been a delightful blend of simplicity and variety, often rooted in the humble beginnings of my family. Chef Boyardee's tale of starting rich and ending penniless in America is a compelling reminder that true wealth lies not in material possessions, but in health and contentment. Yet, if I were to become rich, how would my diet evolve? Would my preferences shift?
Our Healthy Heritage
Let's start with my background. Growing up, my diet was almost entirely plant-based. My children and I still consume food straight from cans, much like it was during my childhood. Even at my late nineties, my family believes that our long lives are, in part, attributed to our nutritious and wholesome diets. This experience has instilled in me a deep appreciation for simple, plant-sourced nourishment.
Expanding My Palette
Becoming rich would undoubtedly mean having access to a broader array of ingredients and recipes. I would love to try every dish in the world's most expensive cookbook, experimenting with elaborate preparations that use over 30 ingredients. These adventurous endeavors would be my culinary wonders, delighting in the joy of cooking and sharing delicious meals. After savoring these exquisite dishes, it would bring immense satisfaction to share my meals with my staff and the local food bank.
Practicality Over Price
However, becoming rich does not necessarily mean altering my core preferences. I find comfort in familiar dishes, like boiled potatoes with Quark and a simple salad, which I would continue to enjoy even if wealthier. There is a sense of humbleness in maintaining these habits, avoiding the whims of extravagance. I am not particularly fond of Chilean Sea Bass unless it is offered by my aunt, who sells more premium fish for over $100 per portion. My approach to dining remains rooted in value and practicality.
Expanding My Diet Sustainably
While staying true to my roots, there would also be room for expansion. A premium Wagyu Steak, one of the finest cuts of beef, could very well find its place in my diet. However, such indulgences would remain secondary. The richness of life doesn't just reside in expensive meals but in the experience of connecting with others and enjoying simple pleasures.
Preserving Humility
Reflecting on my journey, I realize that true richness lies not in material wealth but in contentment. Staying grounded and cherishing the basics will prevent me from feeling like an outcast when faced with exorbitant prices for minor luxuries. The essence of being rich is embracing a lifestyle where the value is placed on enriching experiences, not just in filling our stomachs with expensive food.
