Creative Tamale-Like Dishes Using Corn Tortillas: A Simple and Flavorful Recipe

How to Make a Tamale-Like Dish Using Corn Tortillas

While traditional tamales are made with masa corn dough, you can still create a delicious tamale-style dish using corn tortillas! This unique recipe offers a simple and flavorful way to enjoy the flavors of tamales without the traditional preparation method.

Ingredients

For the Filling

2 cups cooked shredded meat (chicken, pork, or beef) 1 cup red or green salsa 1 cup cheese (optional)

For the Layers:

12-16 corn tortillas 1 cup enchilada sauce (red or green) 1/2 cup diced onions (optional) 1/2 cup chopped cilantro (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Filling

In a bowl, mix the shredded meat with the salsa. If you're using cheese, you can add it to the mixture or reserve it for layering.

Prepare the Tortillas

Heat the corn tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side until they are pliable.

Layer the Tamale Dish

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a baking dish, spread a thin layer of enchilada sauce on the bottom. Place a tortilla on top of the sauce. Add a layer of the meat filling, followed by some cheese, onions, and cilantro if desired. Repeat the layering process, tortilla, filling, cheese, until all ingredients are used, finishing with a tortilla on top.

Bake

Pour any remaining enchilada sauce over the top layer of tortillas and sprinkle with additional cheese if desired. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for about 25-30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until heated through, and the cheese is bubbly.

Serve

Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve with sour cream, more salsa, or avocado.

Notes

This method gives you a dish that has the essence of tamales without the traditional masa dough.

If you want to make authentic tamales, consider using masa harina, which can be found in most grocery stores.

Enjoy your tamale-style dish!
