Are You a True New Yorker if You Like Chicago Deep Dish Pizza?
I was born, raised, and still live in New York City, and I absolutely love Deep Dish pizza. However, my culinary tastes run deep with a love for New York style pizza, Southern BBQ from Memphis, Tex-Mex from the Southwest, and lobster from New England. The point is, I do not understand why some people think you are less of a New Yorker if you enjoy foods from other places.
Adopting Diverse Culinary Traditions
Some of my favorite foods, such as Kosher Deli with its signature pastrami sandwich, pickles, and square Knish, originate from Eastern Europe. Yet, we have embraced these dishes as our own here. This ability to love foods from all over and still call ourselves true New Yorkers highlights the city's rich cultural diversity.
Embracing Chicago Pizza in New York
Of course, I have lived in both places, but I have spent significantly more time in New York City, and I absolutely adore Chicago pizza. In fact, I love it far more than New York-style pizza.
As they say, New York is a state of mind. Just think New York while eating Chicago pizza. Interestingly, New York has cuisine from all over the world, so why not embrace Chicago pizza too? It would be fantastic if someone opened an Ann Sathers here, a historic Chicago-style pizza restaurant.
Being a True NY’er
Yes, if you live in New York and like Chicago deep dish pizza, you are a New Yorker. Truly, the love for a place transcends personal tastes in food. It’s about the shared experience, the city's vibe, and the spirit that unites New York's diverse communities.
Debunking Gatekeeping
The myth that only those who strictly adhere to "New York" tastes can be considered true New Yorkers is nothing more than gatekeeping. If you've answered 'yes' to all three questions below, you are a true New Yorker:
Do you live in New York? Do you hate New York? Do you love New York? It's irrelevant whether you like or dislike NY-style pizzas, Chicago deep dish casseroles, Indian cuisine, or sushi. What truly matters is your love for the city and the spirit it represents.
