Am I the Only One Who Loves Airplane Food?
Briefly discuss the general perception and explore why some do enjoy it.
While many people have mixed feelings about airplane food, it's not solely a negative experience. In fact, some actually enjoy it, especially those who appreciate the nostalgic, novelty, and unique flavors. Furthermore, some airlines have made significant improvements in their meal offerings by focusing on quality and regional cuisine, thereby enhancing the dining experience for passengers. Even if the food isn’t always outstanding, preferences are subjective, making it perfectly normal to have a fondness for it.
Memories of Enhanced Flavors
I remember being very easy to please during flights, especially those in the 1980s with Pan Am. The experience of having a choice of three meals in economy or dining in a fine restaurant in first class was incredible. Some of the dishes I recall fondly include caviar, freshly cooked filet of beef, yummy lobster thermidor, and more. These memories have stayed with me to this day, highlighting the unique and memorable nature of airplane food.
Understanding the Flavors at High Altitude
However, not everyone enjoys the food. One common reason for dislike is that taste buds don’t function as well at high altitudes, causing food to taste blander. To compensate, food is often prepared to be extra spicy. Although this can help, most aircraft meals are not typically spicy enough because taste tests are usually done on the ground, and the taste changes at high altitudes.
Nostalgia and Unique Culinary Journey
For some, airplane food provides a unique and nostalgic experience that can’t be replicated elsewhere. Even if the food isn’t always top-notch, it remains an interesting and fun experience. International flights, especially, offer opportunities to taste local cuisine, creating a memorable experience.
A Unique Example of an Amazing Meal
A memorable experience occurred during a flight to Hawaii. As a vegetarian, I requested a special meal, and it was simply divine. The combination of zesty flavorful veggie dishes, tender rice, seasoned rolls, and more, made for an excellent dining experience. The meal was so good that I even wished for seconds of everything, and I mopped up extra sauce from my plate with a piece of roll. This experience truly made the flight unforgettable, emphasizing the potential for outstanding cuisine in the air.
Conclusion: Whether you love or hate airplane food, it remains a unique and often memorable aspect of air travel. So, don’t be too hard on yourself if you have a fondness for it, as it can indeed be quite enjoyable under certain circumstances.
