A Meal of Thanks and Love: A Son’s Tribute to His Mom

From the time they were little children, my sons were taught to thank the servers at restaurants whenever they placed the beverages or food in front of them. Somehow this carried over at home. My older son started this habit first naturally, and my younger son followed suit. Every time I place the plate in front of them or when they come to the table and the food is already there, they call out 'thanks Mom' before digging in.

I will never forget one time when my oldest son was about 13 or 14 years old, I was still at the stove and didn't hear him. He repeated himself two more times, each time getting louder until I heard him and responded 'you’re welcome, love.' I then realized he would not start eating until I acknowledged his thanks. From then on, I made sure to pay attention and respond immediately!

Woot Yay Oooh!

My family does stuff for each other without making a big show about it. Reciprocation is generally more a show of appreciation than words like thanks. Each person contributes what they can to try to make each other easier or better. I've bought my parents cruise tickets to Alaska, hotels and plane tickets to Hong Kong and Hawaii, and taken them to world-famous restaurants, but I don't really expect them to say anything. We're family, it's what we do.

Unless we specifically request something, a 'thanks' would seem excessive. However, if you do request something, a thanks is definitely more appreciated. Though I try never to ask for something unless I am in a pinch and it can’t be done on my own and I need it.

Uhhh, My Favorite ‘Thanks Mom’

I wouldn’t say 'I love you' or hug her or anything like that. For me, saying 'I love you' to someone is really hard, so it's rare people hear it from me. My parents know that and they know that I love them. They also know how much it means to me when people show appreciation to me. So that 'thanks' is also kinda me saying 'I love you.'

In the world of family dynamics, even the simplest expression of gratitude can mean so much. A sincere 'thanks' reflects not just the act of acknowledging a kindness, but often a deeper bond and appreciation that transcends words. It's a small yet powerful gesture that can lighten the load of everyday life and strengthen familial ties.

Conclusion

A child’s simple act of saying 'thanks' can become a pillar of family bonding. Whether it's saying 'thanks Mom' or doing something thoughtful for each other, these small gestures of gratitude can be the cornerstone of a strong and loving relationship. So, the next time you enjoy a meal with your family, take a moment to express your gratitude. After all, it's what makes the moment truly special and memorable.
